Is it a common thing to ask for this kind of check?

I applied for a job in november. After the interview they told me that I could be a good option for them, but first of all they should do a background check on me, to be sure that I have a clear history and meet their needs. It’s already december and I have no answer from the company. I never had to pass this kind of check so I don’t know how much it might take, but anyway, it’s been too long. the company that should make the report on me is HireRight. Should I call them to ask for some updates, or I should call the company where I applied?
