Is the Follower Count Trap Real?

Serious question: do people still judge an account by how many followers it has? I’ve got solid content, but I feel like brands and followers don’t take me seriously because I don’t have a big number next to my name. Is it ever smart to give that number a push?

Thank you for the honest answer — this really confirms what I’ve been thinking. I’ve had people say “just focus on content,” but it’s tough when no one even sees it.
